• Do you speak this language because it’s your mother tongue or because a teacher inspired you to learn it?.

  English is my mother tongue. I’m British, from Cambridge, although I’ve been living in Bilbao for about ten years now.

• Name a historical or fictional character who, for you, really represents the culture you teach.

  Maybe Mr Bean. Very British humour, very silly and awkward situations but actually quite intelligent and observant under the surface.

• Is there an expression, phrase or behaviour of this character that particularly amuses you?.

  He hardly speaks! Communication is about a lot more than just grammar and vocabulary.

• Why do you think speaking this language can be important, academically, professionally or personally?.

  English just opens a lot of doors. For work, travelling, studying, meeting people or simply having access to much more of what’s out there.

• What is the main difficulty of this language and what can make it easier to learn?.

  For a lot of students, the hardest part is making the jump from 'knowing' English to using it and understanding it in real life contexts. There's no magic trick: you just have to immerse yourself in the language as much as you can!.

• Tell us an anecdote from your experience as a teacher or student.

  I taught English to Tibetan monks and nuns in India. They had much more to teach me than I with them!.

• Help us get to know you better. Tell us about some of the travelling you’ve done.

  I’ve travelled quite a bit around Asia and South America but most of my time abroad has been in India - almost a year in total across three different trips.

• What makes you a Superprof, apart from speaking so many languages perfectly?.

  I think I’m quite good at working out what somebody actually needs rather than just teaching them more English for the sake of it. After years of teaching one-to-one, I’ve realised that a lot of students don’t really need another grammar explanation. They need to speak more, build confidence, get useful correction and learn to actually use all the English they already know.
