Acerca de James
I'm James, originally from London and now based in Barcelona. I've worked in education since 2018, but my relationship with languages goes much further than teaching them.
I spent 8½ years living in China, where I learned Mandarin from scratch, eventually reaching HSK 5 and completing a degree in Chinese Language at Sichuan University. That experience completely shaped the way I teach because I know first-hand what it feels like to be the student: the frustration, the breakthroughs and eventually the confidence that comes from being able to genuinely communicate in another language.
Professionally, I co-founded an education centre in China that supported more than 250 students and have since worked in schools, private education and professional training. I'm TEFL qualified and have taught children, teenagers and adults, including students preparing for Cambridge KET and PET.
I'm naturally sociable, curious and interested in people. I enjoy finding out what motivates someone and adapting the way I communicate accordingly. I take progress seriously, but I don't believe lessons need to feel overly serious. There should be room for conversation, humour and personality.
Ultimately, I teach because I know how much learning another language can change your life. It certainly changed mine, and I love helping other people experience that for themselves.

Every student learns differently, so I don't believe in giving everyone the same lesson. I start by understanding your level, goals, interests and the areas where you need the most support, then build our classes around you.
For English, I teach children, teenagers and adults, from general English and conversation to pronunciation, school support, professional English and Cambridge KET/PET preparation. Lessons are practical and interactive, with plenty of opportunity to actually speak and use the language rather than simply work through a textbook.
I also teach Mandarin from complete beginner to HSK 4. Having learned Mandarin myself and reached HSK 5 after living in China for 8½ years, I understand the challenges students face. Classes can be taught in English, Mandarin or a combination of both as your confidence develops.
My style is relaxed, encouraging and personal, but always with a clear purpose. I want you to enjoy our lessons, feel comfortable making mistakes and, most importantly, be able to see and feel your progress.
