I met Luis at a classical guitar festival. I have been taking weekly lessons with Luis over Skype for the last 18 months. Luis is a great teacher--he notices things that other teachers have missed, even over a video call. He has a relaxed but thorough teaching style, giving great suggestions and encouragement. My playing and confidence playing in front of others has gotten much better since I started studying with Luis.

A knowledgeable and energetic guitar teacher who not only is a great player himself but also loves and enjoy teaching it to the others. His passion for guitar and teaching is clearly seen in every one of his teaching sessions.

Such a warm and positive attitude makes the pupil enjoy the progress. This is not something you would get from most of the teachers out there and Luis Angel Medina is definitely an exception.

From day one, learning from Luis has been an absolute pleasure! Luis is an exceptional teacher, and I have grown enormously in my playing and musical knowledge as a direct result of his teachings.

In his lessons, Luis is efficient with his time, and can accomplish a lot in an hour session. Since I first started taking lessons, Luis has always provided clear insight into how to progress as a player, and benchmarks by which I can measure myself and my practise. When I am struggling with any facet of technique, Luis will take the time necessary to hone in on what I need to practise, and will encourage me to grasp the technique before we move on. Luis taught me how to practise, and he makes progress accessible. But perhaps best of all, Luis’ teaching philosophy focuses on fostering enjoyment and appreciation of the music itself.

As a teacher, Luis ignites a passion for music in his students, as he did with me. He is enthusiastic, and consistently brings new and interesting pieces of music to dissect at his lessons. He has a knack for pinpointing and enjoying the eccentricities of a piece, while teaching appreciation for the various layers within a composition.

Luis has a very encouraging and motivating personality, and is incredibly kind and generous with his time and his teachings. Luis has high standards for himself and his students, and through his gentle teaching style—and his sense of humour—he helps his students feel at ease, even when working on the most complicated of pieces.

I have known Luis for years as a professional guitarist, teacher, and friend. Luis has a genuine passion, broad interests, and deep involvement in guitar teaching, performance, and community. As a performer, Luis plays solos, duets, ensembles, and with other instruments, and he conducts ensembles. He has a very clean technique and sets realistic expectations for his own performances, attributes which he incorporates into his teaching. Luis is very adaptable to the needs and interests of his student from young children to mature adults. Over the years, I have been very impressed by the improvements of Luis’s young students. As a mature adult student, I have benefitted from Luis’s teaching in a variety of settings: guitar ensembles and sectionals, one-on-one coaching for ensemble practice, and individual lessons. Luis is a friendly, approachable, and very patient teacher with realistic expectations. Having a natural talent for rhythm, he is nevertheless very understanding of students’ struggles with rhythm and very effective at helping students master rhythm. Luis has very effective methods of teaching new pieces with respect to memorization, developing a quick grasp, and instilling an early sense of success. He has a rich repertoire of mastering technical challenges. Luis has an advanced understanding of the classical guitar repertoire, which he also instills into his students’ development of musicality and musical understanding. He encourages his students to perform in various settings and teaches coping strategies for performance anxiety. Classical guitar is a comparably young instrument and teaching methodologies are still evolving. Luis has a keen interest in pedagogy and the improvement of guitar teaching. He is very open-minded to trying and embracing new teaching strategies to the benefit of his current and future students. I highly recommend Luis as a classical guitar teacher.

Luis is very energetic, and always makes the best out of me. At the very end, after each class it really helps and makes me understand what I need to focus, and not wander off into the mist practicing inefficiently. So if you do have the will to take on this guitar journey, he’s the best!

Luis is an excellent guitar teacher! I have advanced very far in only two years of working with Luis. I went from having no musical knowledge whatsoever to being able to play/read music pieces on my own.
