Acerca de David
David van der Grinten is a versatile pianist, keyboardist and composer, born and raised in Amsterdam, but currently based in Barcelona. He has received his bachelor's degree from the Conservatory of Amsterdam, and his master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Primarily specialized in the world of jazz, his musical influences range wide, from the likes of Stevie Wonder and The Beatles, to Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane and J.S. Bach. He does not discriminate genres of music. Instead he lives according to the old saying ‘there’s only two kinds of music: good music, and the other kind.’ As an artist and musician in the work-field, he has years of experience both with his own groups (SMANDEM., Sweet Papi), performing on renowned stages such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Bimhuis and Jamboree, as well as as a sideman for Dutch mainstream pop artists such as Emma Heesters and Antoon. Through his work, David seeks to express music that feels honest, playful, and touched with mystery—a reflection of both his curiosity and his commitment to authentic artistic growth.

There are many different aspects to learning how to play music. There is a big physical part to it, comparable to what in dancing would be “the choreography”, but there is also an intellectual side to it which is necessary to really give more depth to whatever you are playing. In my lessons I aim to attend to both of those aspects of playing music. I try to help the student get a general feel and understanding of what music is and how it works, and I give very specific exercises to help the student internalize the music physically and aurally, in order for them to then express themselves freely. I generally don’t work with sheet music all that much. My experience is that the best way to learn music is by ear, but of course I do read music and if requested that is something we could incorporate into our lessons. As for the repertoire, I usually decide together with the student what song/composition we’ll work on next. I do believe it’s important to practice music that you love, otherwise it becomes hard to stay motivated and put your heart into it, and that kind of defeats the point. After years and years of training I know how addictive and fulfilling the process of learning to play the piano is and I’m excited to share that feeling with my students!
