1. «We Wish You a Merry Christmas»
¿Quién no ha escuchado nunca esta canción mítica de Navidad?
Originario del oeste de Inglaterra, la versión moderna de «We Wish You a Merry Christmas» apareció por primera vez en el coro de Arturo Warrell. Básicamente, sustituyeron el «we» por el «I», pero el pronombre personal plural tuvo más éxito, dándole su índole tradicional.
En una versión anterior, en la letra se nombraba el figgy pudding (pudin de higos), un plato que tradicionalmente ofrecía la burguesía inglesa durante el siglo XIX a los coros de Navidad.

2. «Jingle Bells»
¡Este es uno de los villancicos navideños cortos en inglés considerado hoy en día como una de las tonadas estadounidenses más famosas!
Escrito por el músico James Pierpont bajo el título original One-Horse Open Sleigh en 1857, Jingle Bells no era un villancico en su origen, sino que fue después de unas décadas cuando los coros tradicionales se la apropiaron como una canción de la Christmas holiday season.
La pieza evoca las campanas usadas por los caballos de Nueva Inglaterra del siglo XIX. El continuo trote de los cascos y el sonido regular de las campanas en las calles formaban una cierta melodía que James Pierpont trató de reproducir a través del ritmo de la canción.

3. «Jingle Bell Rock»
Muy popular en los Estados Unidos y frecuentemente emitida en las radios estadounidenses, Jingle Bell Rock, cantada por Bobby Helms en 1957, entró inmediatamente después de su lanzamiento en la prestigiosa clasificación Billboard, la lista las mejores ventas de discos.
Desde entonces, ha sido interpretada por artistas como Laura Pausini, Rascal Flatts o el cantante de Navidad por excelencia, Michael Bublé.

4. «O Holy Night»
Esta melodía proviene de un poema francés titulado Minuit, chrétiens (medianoche, cristianos) que data del siglo XVII. Aunque los británicos tradujeron la canción palabra por palabra, la versión moderna que todos conocemos data de 1843.
El texto original es sobre todo religioso: evoca el nacimiento de Jesús y la redención de la humanidad. Fue y sigue siendo popular entre los coros cristianos y se puede escuchar en Nochebuena en las iglesias británicas y estadounidenses.
La pieza ha sido interpretada por artistas como Mariah Carey, Céline Dion, Whitney Houston y Donna Summer.

No podría faltar. Esta pieza fue lanzada en 1994 en los Estados Unidos. All I Want for Christmas is You fue directamente un éxito internacional y sigue siendo hoy el mayor éxito de la cantante Mariah Carey.

6. «Rudolph the red nosed reindeer»
Este es uno de los villancicos navideños en inglés que más que le gusta a los niños.
Cuenta la historia del reno Rudolph, que seguro conocerás de la película Rudolph, el reno de la nariz roja. Los otros renos se ríen de Rudolph por ser diferente hasta que Papá Noel lo escoge para llevar a cabo unas tareas muy especiales. ¡No te vamos a hacer spoiler de la peli!

7. «Silent Night»
Es la versión en inglés del tradicional villancico Noche de Paz. Se puede afirmar que es el villancico más famoso del mundo. Hasta ha sido declarado patrimonio cultural inmaterial por la UNESCO.

Origen de los villancicos clásicos en inglés
Los villancicos, christmas carols en inglés, surgieron como una forma de transmitir oralmente la vida cotidiana de la sociedad y sus costumbres. Los historiadores afirmar que este canto nació en Centroeuropa en el siglo XIII y se difundió por todo Europa y Latinoamérica en los siglos siguientes.
Al inicio la temática de estos cantos no estaba limitada solo a la Navidad, pero poco a poco el concepto de villancico se fue fijando para referirse únicamente a los cantos típicos navideños.
